Auto window – replace or repair?

Almost every driver at least once during the car ownership years came to a situation where he had to face a tough choice – either repair or replace his damaged car windshield. In most cases the damage is either a small chip or a scratch, in which case any local repair shop can fix it, and sometimes driver himself can repair it as well. However, if the damage is larger, then the choice become much harder. Of course most people choose to repair their windshield, however it is recommended to ask a certified specialist. If the cost of repair is more than half of the price of the new glass, then it makes sense to get a new one rather then repairing, since even the most extensive repairs might not last long because of other hidden damages.

To fix smaller scratches on the windshield, repair technicians usually use a special plastic solution that hardens under an ultraviolet light. To fix a small chip, one would drill a small hole in the middle of the chipped area in which a cure is injected. It doesn’t only fills the hole, but also hardens the surrounding area. Its sturdyness is even better than compared to the regular glass. The color and opacity of this plastic is very similar to the surrounding glass, so when the repair is done you can barely notice the fix. However, if you wait too long then the area that needs repairing can grow much larger and become covered with dust and particles of garbage which would make it much harder to make look the same as the rest of the window. That’s why it is recommended to duct tape the chipped/scratched area and get to a repair shop as soon as possible. Also if you do get the damage and have to drive to a mechanic, try choosing an equal road surface and avoid harsh braking and accelerating to prevent further damage.

If your auto window does require replacement, it is strongly recommended to not attempt this yourself and visit a certified specialist. Even though this process doesn’t seem complicated, there are a lot of small details that an average driver may not be aware of, which in turn could lead to your glass falling off or shattering at the worst moment.
